Detailed Description :

The decommissioning of the main platform, the Maureen Alpha platform, had been addressed in two previous studies:

  • Maureen Platform Refloating - Engineering Study and Refloat Simulator - Phase 1.
  • Maureen Platform Refloating - Engineering Study - Phase 2

In this study the decommissioning of the peripheral equipment was addressed:

  • the drilling template,
  • the Articulated Loading Column (ALC),
  • the Moira wellhead,
  • the oil export line to the ALC (approx. 2 km),
  • the two flowlines and umbilical to the Moira wellhead (approx. 10 km).

The objective of the study were to assess the feasibility of decommissioning this equipment and to evaluate the cost, safety and environmental implications of the alternative strategies for each piece of equipment itemised. A detailed inventory of materials and equipment was compiled.

Global options for decommissioning included;

  • abandonment in situ
  • retrieval and recycling
  • retrieval/subsequent disposal
  • refurbishment and re-use

Detailed decommissioning options included;

  • subsea cutting techniques
  • lifting methods
  • float-away
  • piece-meal deconstruction
  • demolition in dry dock
  • re-cycling of materials

In establishing the BPEO in association with Phillips, it was necessary to undertake detailed liaison with external specialist companies in respect of safety, health and the environment. These included Cordah Environmental Management Consultants and Trident Consultants Ltd.
