International Women in Engineering Day 2022 – Yumi Mok

21st June, 2022

Next in our list of features for International Women in Engineering Day is Yumi Mok who is an Administration Manager based in ODE’s Taiwan office.

What do you find rewarding about your role in engineering?

Engineering is a critical industry that makes a significant difference to the world in a variety of ways. I am very happy to be given the opportunity to work with teams in the renewable energy industry who are working to improve global technologies and make a positive difference to the environment.

The engineering industry provides a rewarding range of employment opportunities to people; in my role, I have been involved in office maintenance, billing, HR and recruitment, visa organisation, and conference support. I enjoy this variety – showing that careers in engineering are not purely restricted to technical roles – and I further enjoy the company culture and people within ODE.

Can you provide an example of when your contributions have brought innovation to a project or task?

Engineering projects often require international travel for personnel which has been very challenging under the current COVID restrictions and regulations in Taiwan. When an ER approval process was delayed for over a month, I used my experience liaising with various ministerial and civil service bodies to monitor government advice and seek special consideration for our visa application, allowing the traveller to join the project on schedule, preventing any delays to the project.

What new developments in the industry are you most interested in?

Whilst Europe is the world’s most mature offshore wind region, APAC countries have been focusing on developing their offshore wind capacity in recent years. It is great to see countries such as Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan grow their offshore wind development capacity. Not only is this a great opportunity to develop renewable energy around the world, but this is an exciting opportunity for companies such as ODE to grow in these regions and invest in local personnel for renewables projects.
