International Women in Engineering Day 2020 – Narmina Williams

23rd June, 2020

23rd June 2020 is the International Women in Engineering Day 2020 (INWED), organised by the Women’s Engineering Society, to celebrate and promote women working in the engineering industry. To recognise this day, we will be highlighting our female engineers across the ODE Group, starting with Narmina Williams, a Technical Safety Engineer.

“To me, now is the most exciting time to be an engineer.”

What is an engineer to you and why did you want to become one?

An engineer is someone who takes a problem and finds a solution in the most safe and efficient way. As easy as that sounds, there is a lot of problem-solving on the way, and this is the part that interested me the most! We are currently at a pivotal moment in the Energy Sector where the demand for energy is steadily increasing, but so are the pressures for much-needed changes to climate-related policies. Now more than ever, engineers are required to use their problem-solving skills to come up with new, environmentally sustainable solutions to satisfy this demand. To me, now is the most exciting time to be an engineer.

How did you enter the engineering industry?

I was lucky enough to get some work experience in an engineering company when I was at school. It opened my eyes to the fascinating world of engineering and, from then on, it was clear that that is what I wanted to do. I picked my strongest A-level subjects, which happened to be the requirements for studying Chemical Engineering at University, so I did just that. After the most challenging yet rewarding 4 years, I entered the engineering industry as a Technical Safety Engineer.

What opportunities have you had through your work at ODE?

Working for ODE has allowed me to show my abilities by increasing my responsibilities and allowing me to work on my own initiative. I had the opportunity to travel to Italy on several occasions to work with the design team and provide my support in designing a new offshore gas installation which ODE will be operating. The experience that I gained in the 2 and a half years of working for ODE has been incredible. The varied workload helps keep the work stimulating and allows me to develop a wide range of skills.
